Dodecahedron - Dodecahedron

Photobucket

From: Netherlands
Year: 2012
Genre: Avante-Garde Black Metal

There’s no doubt in my mind that this is going to stand up as one of the best BM releases this year. Dodecahedron follow in the path laid out by bands like Deathspell Omega and Blut Aus Nord but, with their debut album, they have already begun to create their own identity and sound. Discordant, dissonant and at times almost thrashy guitars spiral around the slithering bass lines that add the only element of melodicism. The drumming is incredible, aggressive and tight but jazzy and loose, striking the perfect balance between chaos and order. Whether chanting or screaming, the vocals are terrifying and, along with the random unnerving nature of the sound samples, will have you begging for mercy. Progressive and catchy, yet downright horrifying, Dodecahedron have crafted an album that captures the spirit of traditional black metal but moves far beyond its confines into territory that few bands have the ability to navigate. This isn’t the icy chill of Norse forests, this is the cold unforgiving desolation of spacetime.
Buy it at Seasons of Mist.
